Why I Built This Site?
My fascination with minerals began with jadeite and its signature vivid green. As I studied gemology and earned my jadeite appraiser certification, I learned that this iconic color comes from trivalent chromium ions replacing aluminum in the jadeite crystal lattice. For the first time, I saw how scientific mechanisms lie beneath natural beauty.
But that discovery led me to another, more concerning truth: the same element that creates jadeite’s beauty can become an environmental hazard. Intensive open-pit mining exposes chromium-bearing rock and tailings. Tropical rainfall leaches chromium into the environment, and some trivalent chromium oxidizes into highly toxic, mobile hexavalent chromium, compounded by arsenic, lead and cadmium. Illegal downstream jadeite dyeing workshops worsen the problem by discharging untreated hexavalent chromium wastewater.
This website grew from that realization. It is more than a mineral encyclopedia—it is a space to connect mineral science, biology, and environmental stewardship. As a high school student focused on geobiology, I built this to share what I’ve learned, and to show how curiosity about gemstones can lead to meaningful scientific inquiry.
